Distance education is an education that aims to deliver education to students who are not physically present. It is often termed as flexible learning as one can handle other commitments along with their studies.
There are two systems of correspondence education: A. the regular Duration Scheme and B. Fast Duration system. In the regular system, the qualification requirements for enrollment are similar to those prescribed for the normal university courses. In the open system, the courses are open to any person who may not even possess any formal qualifications. But in some institutions they should have attained the age of 18 years for under-gradate and diploma courses and 21 years for postgraduate courses. Enrollment in some courses is subject to qualifying in a written examination.

Distance education gets overwhelming response in India, the universities introduced many new distance-education job oriented courses according to the changing times and students requirements. However, in this process, the actual motive of providing quality education to all took the backseat as the main focus of universities slowly shifted to making more and more money. Currently in India, the Distance Education departments are generating the maximum revenue for their universities, in many cases more than even the professional and self financing courses.
